BUFFALO, N.Y. -- The backlog with the Department of Veterans Affairs has reached a new high, with the average claimant now having to wait 262 days to get a decision.

According to the Center For Investigative Reporting, the average wait time at the Buffalo office is even worse at 267 days. There are 8,118 claims pending at the Buffalo office.

Specialist Christopher Fuller of the Town of Tonawanda, who served in Afghanistan, has been waiting for 14 months for a decision on his claim. He suffers from PTSD, in addition to other physical injuries.

"Hire more people, and start taking care of the veterans that have taken care of this country," Fuller said.

Specialist Fuller can't work due to his injuries, and he's having a hard time making ends meet while the VA slowly processes his claim.

After posting this story on social media, 2 On Your Side heard from many other local veterans dealing with similar delays with the compensation claims.

The VA says it is changing its training, applying new technology, and updating its processing capabilities, all in an effort to completely eliminate the backlog by 2015.
