BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Doug Fabian, executive director with Crisis Services, appeared on Daybreak Saturday to give advice on how parents can talk to their children about the events in Newtown, Conn.

He said the first step is for parents to make sure they're in the right frame of mind to have that conversation with their children.

"Before you determine what to say to your children, you need to find out what's going on with yourself, perhaps with your partner, with your loved one," Fabian said, adding that "I don't think you want to rush into any conversation with your children. I think you want to observe your children. You want to witness how is this impacting them."

Fabian said parents should keep the conversation simple.

Crisis Services has a 24-hour hotline at 716-834-3131.
