BUFFALO, NY - The Army Corps of Engineers Buffalo District is erecting a fence to prevent access to the Black Rock Lock Lower West Pier, a concrete structure that separates Black Rock Channel from the Niagara River at the north end of Squaw Island.
The pier is connected to a park that occupies the northern end of the island and, according to a statement issued by the Army Corps of Engineers Wednesday afternoon, people have been using the pier for fishing in the warmer months.
"We recognize the value of this outdoor activity," the statement reads, "however, the Lower West Pier is a navigation structure designed to separate the Niagara River from the Black Rock channel. It was never intended for recreational use."
Construction of the fence is expected to begin April 1st.
