LOCKPORT, NY-- The Lockport Industrial Development voted unanimously Thursday in favor of giving Yahoo! tax breaks to build a new data and call center that would create 115 jobs.
Opinions at the public hearing, just before the vote on Thursday, were strong and mixed.
David Mongielo, who runs a small business in Lockport, is upset the rich are getting tax breaks that the poor do not.
"The rich get the tax breaks and the poor don't," says David Mongielo. "The people that struggle that work in the community that have the qualified people that have the skilled jobs we don't get nothing, nothing at all. And we suffer more than anyone else, why we have to brunt the bills and these companies don't."
"It's going to create about 115 jobs in the area, it's a $170 million investment, a big investment from a worldwide company, a world class company that we ought to be courting to have in our community," says Mark Smith.
Would Yahoo! have expanded on the land it already owned without the big tax breaks? "The representatives of Yahoo! made it very clear they are operating in a global competitive situation and that in order for their operations to be competitive that the incentives that they requested from the IDA were essential," says IDA Chairman David Kenyon.
