Grand Island, NY - Turning ninety is no doubt a major milestone, and a man from Ohio plans to celebrate the big birthday in a big way, right here in Western New York.  Pilot John Lawton is attempting to fly over the U.S./Canada border near Grand Island ninety times.

Lawton got special permission from the F.A.A. and other agencies to attempt the feat in his Cessna 172.  He's been a pilot for 56 years and wanted to do something special to mark his 90th birthday.

Lawton has ties here.  He says this is where he had his closest call during his many years of flying.  Lawton made an emergency landing at the Buffalo airport back in 1956 with 11 inches of snow on the ground.  He's of course glad to see much clearer weather in the forecast for his flights, which will continue on Tuesday.
