Town of Boston, NY - A good samaritan helped an accident victim, but the skills he used came from an unexpected source.
Robert Nicholas was going to the Erie County Fair with his wife and a friend when they drove by a rollover accident. Police say that a 17 year old lost control of his vehicle after driving onto the unpaved shoulder on Back Creek Road in the Town of Boston.
A 16 year old passenger suffered severe arm injuries.
Robert Nicholas helped apply a tourniquet for the 16 year old. A tourniquet is a bandage that uses pressure to control bleeding.
He explains where he learned the technique, "I watched Shark Week this week, and I did learn how to put a tourniquet on. And I did say that and they were laughing a little bit."
The 16 year old suffered a fractured left wrist and was flown to ECMC due to the amount of blood lost. He was listed in fair condition.
Nicholas says he stayed with the teens until emergency crews arrived and then got out of the way. He doesn't consider himself a hero. He hopes someone would do the same for his child.
