ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. - 16 days after his 'minor surgical procedure" Buffalo Bills rookie quarterback EJ Manuel is good to go and will be under center when the Bills start the 2013 season Sunday against the New England Patriots at Ralph Wilson Stadium.
Coach Doug Marrone made the announcement at 7:45 Wednesday morning during the team meeting.
Last week Marrone said he would wait to see how early EJ could return to team drills and how his left knee responds before he announces who gets the start. On Monday he said he would probably know on Wednesday. Marrone also said he was a straight shooter, and so far that appears to be the case.
Manuel returned to full practices on Sunday, and made steady improvement as the days went on. The fact that there were only two quarterbacks, Manuel and Jeff Tuel, on the depth chart to start the week was an indication of Manuel's recovery.
The big question now is how two weeks away from game action will affect Manuel's performance heading into Sunday. If Wide Receiver Stevie Johnson's opinion is any indication, not much. Johnson told me Monday that Manuel "looks like he hasn't missed any time at all."
