ALBANY, NY-Governor Cuomo announced Friday the state will make 2,100 portable cribs or "playpens" available to Social Service Departments and volunteer agencies for distribution to families in need.
It's the second year in a row for the program, aimed at helping families provide a safe place for their children to sleep.
Dangerous sleep situations can result in suffocation or Sudden Infant Death Syndrome and have been responsible for 31% of child deaths reported to the Office of Child and Family Services since 2010.
The playpens are being made available first to local Social Service Districts and then to volunteer agencies. Requests to those organizations are being accepted through September 13th when the distribution play will be finalized based on the number of requests received.
