CHEEKTOWAGA, N.Y. -- There's a new gas station at the intersection of Walden Avenue and Union Road in Cheektowaga, and it is grabbing the attention of more than just drivers low on gas.
The Green Frog opened on the busy intersection near Walden Galleria last Friday; its price per gallon was $3.86. It's gone down more than 30 cents, and nearby gas stations Delta Sonic and Jim's Truck Stop have matched the price at each decrease.
"We're just trying to get everyone's attention," said Michael Borrello, the owner of The Green Frog's son and a shift manager. "And I think it's working."
Currently, Jim's Truck Stop is matching The Green Frog at $3.55 per gallon, and Delta Sonic is keeping its price one penny less, $3.54. On average, it takes Delta Sonic about three hours to decrease its price of gas after The Green Frog does, according to Borrello.
Borrello said he hasn't heard any complaints from the owners of the two competing gas stations, which are each within less than a quarter-mile distance from The Green Frog.
"Actually, we're kind of curious ourselves as to what they think," Borrello said. "But it's all in good fun, we're having a good time over here and we're meeting a lot of people."
At some gas stations around Buffalo, regular gas is $3.85, like Valero in Town of Tonawanda. But Borrello said The Green Frog will keep the price of gas at a low cost for as long as it can.
