WASHINGTON - More than a year before voters go to the polls, the two leading candidates for New York's 23rd Congressional District have raised more than $2.2 million in campaign donations.
Republican Rep. Tom Reed of Corning has outraised likely Democratic challenger Martha Robertson by a 4-to-1 ratio since the start of the year, according to reports filed with the Federal Election Commission.
Reed has raised $1.79 million compared to $427,528 raised by Roberston through Sept. 30, the filings show.
But national Democrats and women's organizations such as Emily's List are ramping up their support for Roberston.
Emily's List sent out a national fundraising email Tuesday urging members to donate to three female House candidates - Robertson, Eloise Gomez Reyes in California and Gwen Graham in Florida.
And the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee said Tuesday that Reed is one of 10 incumbent Republicans who are being targeted in a series of radio ads.
New York's 23rd Congressional District stretches from Ithaca to Jamestown along the Southern Tier and northward to part of Ontario County.
The district is rated likely Republican by the nonpartisan Cook Political Report, but the strong showing by Democrat Nate Shinagawa in 2012 has attracted the Democrats' interest as they look for the 18 new seats they need to pick up in the 2014 election in order to win back majority control of the House.
Robertson, an early Democratic recruit, serves as chairwoman of the Tompkins County Legislature.
Her campaign had $375,327 in cash at the end of September.
Reed, a former mayor of Corning, ended the reporting period with $812,115 in campaign cash.
Reed serves as a member of the powerful House Ways and Means Committee, which has jurisdiction over tax policy and serves as a magnet for corporate campaign donations.
A little more than $1 million of Reed's campaign donations this year have come from political action committees, including the Anheuser Busch Companies PAC, the American Bankers Association PAC, Altria Group PAC, the Bond Dealers PAC, Dominion PAC, Duke Energy PAC and the U.S. Apple Association PAC.
Roberston has received $42,616 in PAC donations.
