BUFFALO -- Halloween is a fun time for kids to dress up and of course trick or treat.
When you get your kids dressed up for this Halloween and prepare to go door to door you should know there's a tool that will show you who your neighbors are.
"Which houses they may not go to and what streets to avoid -- Or maybe a particular area to keep a look out on their children for," mother Katie Bolden said.
At www.crimereports.com you can find out if sex offenders live near you by simply typing in your address and then clicking on advanced search. The map will then show all the houses red flagged near you.
"I think it's a great thing to do just to be aware of what's going on, regardless of Halloween. It's just important to be informed about what's going on in the neighborhood of which you live," mother Polly Perez said.
Currently there are 1281 sex offenders in Erie County. 289 are considered high risk.
Under Operation Halloween, The New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision requires sex offenders on parole to: 1) remain indoors and at home on Halloween 2) not wear Halloween costumes or open their doors to trick or treaters.3)They can't have Halloween candy in their possession.
But The Sex Offender Registration Act does not contain any provisions that prevent a registered sex offender who is not under Parole or Probation supervision from distributing candy to trick-or-treaters.
So it's important for parents to be informed and do their homework.
"I would advise parents to go with their children, have an adult with them and watch them. Also, check their candies as they get them."
