BROCTON, NY - A devastating fire broke out overnight in a Southern Tier community that has already seen its share of heartbreak and loss this year.
This time the community of Brocton in Chautauqua County has lost a landmark church.
Flames broke out around 1:30 Sunday morning and gutted the Tri-Church Parish on Main Street in the village.

Numerous area fire departments were called in to assist Brocton firefighters. There were no injuries but now the church community, which is made up of three blended Lutheran and Methodist congregations, must determine where to go from here.
"I just feel that the church is a building. The foundation is ... the people, and I think that's what we're going to have to look at going forward, how strong our foundation is," said Gary Planty, a parishioner and Tri-Church board member. "Buildings can be replaced, people have to be strong to move forward."
Church members had just finished sprucing up the church exterior, which was a central structure in Brocton.
The community suffered earlier this fall when high school football player Damon Janes died from a game injury.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
