CHEEKTOWAGA, NY-- A Sloan man faces endangering the welfare of a child and animal cruelty charges for allegedly beating and shooting his dog to death.
Cheektowaga Police say they were called to a home on Broadway in Sloan early Sunday after a nearby resident said a man shot a dog in the home.
When officers arrived, they found a dead German Shepard on the floor.
They say the owner of the dog, Michael J. Tortorici, claimed that dog attacked him, so he shot the dog so no one else would be attacked.
Officers later discovered that the dog had been severely beaten, suffering a broken eye socket and other broken bones before he was shot and left to die in the basement.
A 12-year-old boy was in the home at the time of the beating and shooting police say.
Tortorici was arraigned, with bail set at $25,000. He was sent to the Erie County Holding Center.
