San Diego, CA (Sports Network) - Johnny Dee scored a team-high 19 points to
lift the San Diego Toreros to a 74-68 upset of the BYU Cougars in a West
Coast Conference battle at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
Ken Rancifer added 16 points and six assists for San Diego (13-12, 6-4 WCC),
which took sole possession of fourth place in the conference standings with
the win. Chris Manresa registered a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds
while Dennis Kramer provided eight points and 10 boards in 19 minutes of
Tyler Haws went 10-of-17 from the field to net 27 points for BYU (18-7, 8-3),
which had won its previous three games. Brandon Davies contributed a double-
double of 20 points and 10 rebounds in the loss.
The Cougars jumped out to an early 18-10 lead, but San Diego generated a 15-5
run to jump back in front. Although BYU outscored the hosts, 16-8, in points
off of turnovers in the first half, the Toreros still managed to take a 40-36
lead into the intermission.
San Diego protected its lead for the entirety of the second stanza by shooting
52.2 percent from the field including a 5-of-11 mark from beyond the arc. BYU
shot just 33.3 percent from the floor after the break and although it managed
to cut the deficit to two points with 4:12 remaining in regulation, it could
get no closer.
The Toreros held a 41-34 edge in the rebounding battle to overcome being
outscored, 38-32, in the paint and also, 23-15, in points off of turnovers.
The Cougars converted only 11-of-22 free throw attempts in the setback.
