Buffalo, NY (Sports Network) - Colt Ryan poured in 39 points and broke the career scoring record for the Evansville Purple Aces who took down the Canisius Golden Griffins, 84-83, in the quarterfinals of the CollegeInsider.com Tournament at Koessler Athletic Center.
Ryan moved past Larry Humes' previous record of 2,236 points after hitting 11- of-22 shots from the floor for Evansville (21-14). Troy Taylor added 10 points and eight assists for the Purple Aces.
Billy Baron finished with 21 points to lead Canisius (20-14). Alshwan Hymes chipped in 14 points off the bench, Harold Washington scored 13 before fouling out and Chris Manhertz tacked on 10.
Canisius shot 50 percent from the floor and dropped in four shots from 3- point range to take a 37-28 lead at the break. Evansville shot just 35.5 percent from the floor and had a single triple.
Both teams shot well after halftime. Evansville connected on 60 percent from the field and 5-of-10 from 3-point range while Canisius shot 56.7 percent overall and had six more 3-pointers. The Purple Aces opened the period on a 12-3 run to claim a 42-41 lead with 16:04 to play. Canisius would answer and go up by as many as seven points during the middle of the half before Evansville finally grabbed a lead again, 71-69, with a jumper from Ryan with 2:30 remaining. Ryan led the charge down the stretch when the Purple Aces led by as many as eight by scoring 20 of the team's final 22 points.
Evansville had a 23-12 edge in points off turnovers and a 20-11 scoring advantage at the free-throw line. The Golden Griffins knocked down 10 shots from beyond the arc but had just 11 assists on 31 field goals.
