College Park, MD (SportsNetwork.com) - Dez Wells poured in 21 points,
including the game-winning 3-pointer in final minute, as the Maryland
Terrapins outlasted the Miami-Florida Hurricanes, 74-71, in an Atlantic Coast
Conference bout at the Comcast Center.
Wells had a flawless shooting night, making 7-of-7 from the field and 6-of-6
at the foul line for Maryland (12-9, 4-4 ACC), which had been losers of four
of five. Evan Smotrycz and Jake Layman scored 15 points apiece for the home
For Miami (10-10, 2-6), Rion Brown led all scorers with 25 points on 5-of-8
from the field and 12-of-13 from the stripe. Manu Lecomte added 19 points,
Garrius Adams netted 12 points and Donnavan Kirk tallied nine points and nine
Miami outshot Maryland from the field in the first half, 50 percent to 44.4
percent, but the Terps carried a 30-29 lead into intermission by draining 6-
of-13 from 3-point range in the opening 20 minutes.
The Terps appeared to be in control up by 10 with under two minutes remaining,
but the Hurricanes pieced together a furious 10-0 run, with a Brown 3-pointer
with 19 seconds remaining tying the game at 71. Maryland answered on the other
end, however, when Wells drilled game-winner with eight seconds left. Up by
three, Maryland intentionally fouled Miami with two seconds left. Lecomte had
an 0-of-2 trip to the stripe and Layman secured the rebounded following the
second miss, as the Terps survived the scare.
Miami committed 14 turnovers, which resulted in 22 points for Maryland.
