Howie on the Road to Set WNY Passing Record
Maurice Howie, a South Park junior, has started at quarterback for the Sparks since his freshman year. His stats from 2010 through 2012 are as follows:
2010: 68/127, 1031 yards, 9 touchdowns
2011: 111/182, 1446 yards, 14 touchdowns
2012: 96/134, 1342 yards, 16 touchdowns
Total: 275/443, 3819 yards, 39 touchdowns
Maurice has become only the third player in WNY high school football history to pass for 1000 yards in three seasons. Williamsville South's Joe Licata (2008-2010) and Maple Grove's Randall Secky (1997-99) were the other 2 quarterbacks to achieve this milestone.
In addition to his passing, the junior has rushed for 962 yards and 11 touchdowns. If Maurice reaches for 1000 yard passing mark as a senior, he will be one of the most prolific passers even in Western New York since he would be the only quarterback to pass for 1000 yards in each of his four years.
The genes are apparent in the family as his dad, Maurice, made All-WNY in the early nineties.
Note: Can you imagine what his stats would be this year if Chaquille Nettles stayed at South Park rather than transferring to Williamsville South?
Tim Delaney, head coach, said that "Maurice is an exceptional talent and a great leader."
James Henley, South Park running back in the nineties, is the only player to rush for 1000 yards in each of his 4 years. If Maurice throws for 1000 yards next season, the Sparks would have both records.
