Buffalo Bills Coach Chan Gailey
Here is a quick glance at the Bills coaching staff for the 2010 season:
Head Coach/Offensive Coordinator: Chan Gailey. 1st year with Bills, 16th year in NFL. Gailey served as head coach of the Dallas Cowboys from 1998-99, leading the Cowboys to playoff berths both seasons while compiling an 18-14 regular season record.
Gailey also was offensive coordinator for four different NFL teams: Denver (1989-90), Pittsburgh (1996-97), Miami (2000-01) and Kansas City (2008).
In seven of the nine seasons Gailey has been coaching in the NFL, his teams have made the playoffs seven times, including four Super Bowls.
Gailey served as head coach at Georgia Tech from 2002-2007, leading the Yellow Jackets to bowl appearances in his first 6 seasons. He compiled a 44-33 overall record at Tech.
Offensive Coordinator/Running Backs Coach: Curtis Modkins. Modkins spent the 2009 season leading the Arizona Cardinals rushing attack to one of their most productive seasons in team history.
Modkins broke into the NFL as running backs coach with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2008, shortly after being named offensive coordinator at Colorado St.
Prior to that, Modkins worked coaching defensive backs at Georgia Tech in 2002 and running backs from 2003-2007. He was also cornerbacks coach at New Mexico from 1998-2001.
Tight Ends Coach: Bob Bicknell. 1st year with Bills, 4th year in NFL. He was tight ends coach at Kansas City the three years before joining the Bills, and also worked with the offensive line with the Chiefs.
Quarterbacks Coach: George Cortez. 1st year in NFL/1st year with Bills. Cortez spent 18 seasons as a coach in the Canadian Football League, including 11 with the Calgary Stampeders. He won four Grey Cup championships with Calgary an an assistant coach.
Cortez also spent four years as offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach at California from 2002-2005, working closely with current NFL quarterbacks Aaron Rodgers and Kyle Boller.
Offensive Line: Joe D/Alessandris. 1st year with Bills/3rd year in NFL. Was KC Chiefs assistant o-line coach in 2008-2009, and was offensive line coach at Georgia Tech 2002-2007.
Wide Receivers: Stan Hixon. 1st year with Bills/7th NFL season. Hixon was the Washington Redskins wr coach the previous 6 seasons. Before that, Hixon coached four years at LSU.
Defensive Coordinator: George Edwards. 1st year with Bills/13th NFL season.
Edwards spent the past 12 seasons in the NFL, including the last 5 as linebacker's coach for the Miami Dolphins. Edwards was the lb's coach for the Cleveland Browns in 2004, and the year before served as defensive coordinator for the Washington Redskins for the 2003 season.
Edwards also spent four years with the Dallas Cowboys from 1998-2001 as linebackers coach.
Defensive Backs: George Catavolos. 5th year with Bills/26th year in NFL. Catavolos was retained by Chan Gailey, as the Bills pass defense ranked 2nd in the NFL and led the AFC with 28 interceptions. Prior to coming to Buffalo in 2006, Catavolos was also db coach with the Detroit Lions, Washington Redskins, Indianapolis Colts and Carolina Panthers.
Outside Linebackers: Bob Sanders. 2nd year with Bills/10th year in NFL. Sanders was retained by Chan Gailey, after serving as Bills defensive line coach in 2009. Sanders served on the Green Bay Packers staff before coming to the Bills, the last three as the team's defensive coordinator.
Defensive Line: Giff Smith. 1st year with Bills/1st year in NFL.
Smith brings 19 years of college coaching experience to Buffalo, holding the position as defensive line coach and recruiting coordinator at Georgia Tech from 2004-2009.
