Former Sabres coach Lindy Ruff has hired James Patrick, his former assistant in Buffalo, as his assistant coach in charge of defense with the Dallas Stars.

Patrick was an assistant with Ruff for seven seasons, and was not retained by new head coach Ron Rolston.

Patrick also played for the Sabres. He was a defenseman on the team that lost to the Stars in the 1999 Stanley Cup Final.

A former first round pick of the Rangers back in 1981, Patrick played in 1,280 NHL games with the Rangers, Whalers, Flames, and Sabres.
